Snowy: the Diary of Eva Fischer by Siobhán McHugh

Snowy: the Diary of Eva Fischer is part of the 'My Story' series and was written by Siobhán McHugh. This book is about Eva Fischer who is a half German girl. Eva and her parents lived in Sydney until she was 11 years old. In 1958 they move to Cabramurra, a small city in Australia, so her dad could work in the Snowy Scheme. Although this was after the war, some people still believed that the Germans were 'The Enemies'. She meets new people and sees that Cabramurra is more multicultural than Sydney.

When Francesca, an Italian woman, lives with Eva and her parents they try 'foreign' food like spaghetti and pizza. She is surrounded by every nationality but still doesn't like being German.

This book is historical fiction and is written in diary entries. I found it was too similar to a real diary so some of the diary entries aren't very interesting. The first 50 pages of the book took a very long time for me to read because it just wasn't a page turner. But after that, it gets quite interesting.

It is a very good book if you want to learn about the Snowy Scheme or if you're interested in multiculturalism in Australia in the past. Overall, it has a good moral and is an educational book.

  1. I also had to read this book for school! I didn't really like it but the way you wrote makes me see that it was a good book for school and it did teach me about multiculturalism and the snowy scheme, i guess it wasn't all that bad !
